Syphilis Cases On the Rise Since 2002

about-syphilis

Syphilis, a chronic bacterial disease, is most commonly developed by infection during sexual intercourse, and in rare cases by the infection of a developing fetus. Syphilis comes from the bacterium treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum. Symptoms of syphilis can be different depending on the stage of the disease, which can be segmented as primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary. This STD is usually indicated by single skin ulceration, but in many cases, there can be multiple. In the past, syphilis was a much more serious disease; in Jared Diamond’s book Guns, Germs, and Steel, Jared addressed: “Its pustules often covered the whole body from the head to the knees, caused flesh falling off people’s faces, and led to death within a few months.” In the present day, syphilis reveals as an ancient relic, which we can see in documentaries how impact syphilis was rather than a disease someone you know has gone through. However, after more than a decade of increasing syphilis cases, the people of the United States are faced with the highest rate in a long time.

When the new millennium started, it looked as if the United States had almost completely got rid of Syphilis. According to a report released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, in November 2014, cases of syphilis rose dramatically for both males and females in every state of the United States. Cases with early indications of syphilis (primary and secondary) increased by over 15 percent from the year 2013 to 2014. Not only did reports of syphilis through sexual intercourse increased, the rate of syphilis cases through congenital syphilis, which is one of the types passed by an infected mother to her child during pregnancy had increased by a significant 27.5 percent.

Ever since the availability of penicillin in the 1940s, a type of antibiotic, cases of syphilis decreased drastically. Syphilis had become relatively rare, though certain developing countries still had problems with it. From the 1940s onwards, there was a constant downward trend of syphilis reports, up until when the trend reversed near the end of 2002. The number of syphilis cases has continued to increase ever since 2002. For example, reports in New Orleans showed that syphilis cases had doubled between the years 2012 and 2014. Even in big cities in the United States, such as New York, doctors and specialists are seeing a large increase in not only syphilis but other sexual transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and chlamydia.

Doctors and researchers are still trying to work out why sudden significant increases of syphilis are being reported now. Despite a lot of effort and tests, health officials cannot pinpoint the exact causes. Some researchers say it is because technology becoming more common in people’s lives. Recently, a growing number of people are having casual sex through dating apps such as Tinder and Grindr. More casual sex leads to more sexual intercourse between people that don’t know each other sexual past. However, there has been no conclusive evidence that these apps are the reason behind the increase in syphilis cases.

The main problem with the syphilis STD is not that it cannot be cured, but that it is sometimes hard to identify. Doctors and medical officials know that syphilis is completely curable with the use of penicillin, but when patients come to get treated for the first time, they have usually had the disease for over 10 days. This is not the patients’ fault, it is very possible to go through the early stages of the infection without knowing it. The best way to not catch the disease is to not have sexual intercourse at all, but if you do, make sure you know your partner well.

If you do end up thinking you might have this STD, the best possible action to take is to get the best treatment. Whether you are a patient seeking medical attention or a doctor looking for the best way to give an accurate response to a patient, it is important to get the best product and material to test the patients for diseases like syphilis.
