More Information about the Vaginal Speculum

Vaginal Speculums are used by gynecologists to open the vagina walls. The use of vaginal speculums allows gynecologists a visual inspection of the vagina and cervix, as well as a way to collect the cervical cells necessary for a Pap smear test. Vaginal speculums can also be used to detect medical conditions such as cancer, amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, infertility, prolapse, and infections and diseases. Vaginal speculums are also used by gynecologists to perform various surgeries.

Different types of vaginal speculums commonly used are as following:

Pederson Speculum: Pederson speculum is a flat narrow speculum that will be used in women with narrow vaginal canals. Narrow vaginal canals can be found in women who have never had sexual intercourse but it can also be found in elderly women and can be caused because of injuries. Pederson speculum is a double blade duckbill speculum inserted with the blades closed. The blades can be opened by an external screw.

Cusco speculum: This type of speculum can be folded up so it is easier to transport it and storage. These kinds of vaginal speculums are available with screws at the side, center and in special narrow virgin size.
As it is available in different sizes, Cusco vaginal speculums can also help to insert uterine devices. One of the most commonly use of Cusco speculum is in endoscopy. Cusco speculum offers different types, both for virgin women and for women who have had sexual intercourse. Depending on the age and condition of the patient, the gynecologist can decide which type of Cusco speculum to use. The typical size of Cusco vaginal speculum is 80 mm in length and 22mm in width.

Vaginal Speculum FAQs

Does it hurt when the vaginal speculum is inserted into the vagina?
It should not hurt, but it can feel a little uncomfortable. Remember to take deep breaths when the speculum is inserted into the vagina and to relax the surrounded muscles as much as possible. This will also help the vaginal muscles to relax, making the exam less uncomfortable. Discomfort is typically caused by too-tense muscles.
Is there anything that I can do to make it more comfortable?
Your gynecologist will use lubrication to make it easier to insert the vaginal speculum into the vagina.
