Sore Throats
Tongue depressors are used to see if someone has a sore throat, strep throat, or tonsillitis. Symptoms of each are the same (sore throat, difficulty in swallowing, swollen lymph nodes and tonsils) but the treatments vary. Sore throats usually go away by themselves and it’s only an irritation of the throat due to pollution or allergies. For these symptoms over the counter medications can be used.
Strep throat is contagious and creates swelling of the mucous membranes. It is a result of a special kind of bacterial infection. It can be treated with antibiotics.
Tonsillitis is inflammation of the tonsils which are pads of tissue on each side of the back of your throat. It is usually caused by a virus, but bacterial infections can cause the same effect. If tonsillitis doesn’t get better from medication or is constantly reoccurring, then you need to get the tonsils surgically removed.
